There are very many big-shot Hollywood stars that have roots in Africa and here is a look at the top ten.
1. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje
Adewale is a British actor and former fashion model born on 1967 in 22 August 1967 in London, England, to Nigerian parent from the Yoruba tribe. Adewale has appeared in many movies and series since making his debut in the movie Congo in 1995 but he is best known for his roles as Lock-Nah in The Mummy Returns, Nykwana Wombosi in The Bourne Identity, Mr. Eko on Lost and Simon Adebisi on Oz.
2. Nonso Anozie
Nonso Anozie is a British actor of Nigerian descent born in Lincoln, London in 1979. His most popular works include the role of Othello in William Shakespeare‘s King Lear, for which he won the Ian Charleson Award in 2004 and his roles on Game of Thrones and The Grey.
3. Idris Elba
Idrissa Akuna “Idris”, born 6 September 1972 in London to a Sierra Leonean father and a Ghanaian mother, is an English actor, producer, singer, rapper, and DJ. He is best known for his portrayal of a drug lord and an aspiring businessman Russell “Stringer” Bell in the HBO series The Wire, Detective John Luther in Luther, and Nelson Mandela in the biographical film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
4. Chiwetel Ejiofor
Chiwetelu Umeadi “Chiwetel” Ejiofor, born 10 July 1977 to Nigerian Igbo Parents with UK citizenship, is a British actor of film, television, and theatre who has appeared in numerous movies since his debut in Deadly Voyage in 1996. He is famous for his roles as Okwe in Pretty Things, The Operative in Serenity, Lola in Kinky Boots, Luke I Children of Men and Solomon in 12 Years a Slave. He has received various awards and nominations for his work including Academy and Golden Globe nominations and the BAFTA for 12 Years a Slave.
5. Djimon Hounsou
Djimon Gaston Hounsou is a a Beninese American actor and model born 24 April 1964 in Cotonou, Bénin who moved to France at the age of thirteen. His most famous roles include Cinque in Amistad, Juba in Gladiator, Mateo in In America and Solomon Vandy in Blood Diamond for which he has received numerous awards and nominations, including two Academy Award nominations.
6. Peter Mensah
Peter Mensah, born 27 August 1959 in Accra, Ghana, is a Ghanaian-British actor, best known for his roles in Tears of the Sun, 300 and Dead Space (video game), and more recently on the Starz original series, Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, and Spartacus: Vengeance.
7. Edi Gathegi
Edi Mue Gathegi is a Kenyan-American film, stage and television actor born on 27 March 1979. His best works include his recurring appearance as Dr. Jeffrey Cole in the television series House, as Cheese in the 2007 film Gone Baby Gone and as Laurent in the Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Darwin in X-Men: First Class.
8. Gbenga Akinnagbe
Gbenga Akinnagbe is an American actor, best known for his role as Chris Partlow on the HBO original series The Wire. Gbenga Akinnagbe was born on 12 December 1978 in Washington to Nigerian parents and grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland.
9. David Oyelowo
David Oyelowo is a British actor born on 1 April 1976 in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, to Nigerian parents. He has appeared in numerous movies since his debut as CJ in Dog Eat Dog in 2001 and has earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Male as Brian in Middle of Nowhere.
10. Dayo Okeniyi
Oladayo A. “Dayo” Okeniyi is a Nigerian-born actor, popularly known for playing the role of Thresh in The Hunger Games. He was born on 14 June 1988 and moved the US in 2003. Prior to being cast in The Hunger Games, Okeniyi worked in local theatre and in film shorts. He recently landed a crucial role in the new Terminator trilogy where he will play a Steve Jobs-like tech genius.
