It’s really happening; Lupita Nyong’o and Rihanna will feature in a Netflix buddy movie, and it’s all thanks to the unyielding power of social media, which also decided who gets to direct and oversee the screenplay.
The concept for the movie started life in 2014, when a photo of the two stars at the Miu Miu Fashion Show circulated wildly on Tumblr, where users saw beyond the sartorial choice and imagined a movie scene.
Tumblr user Roxy captioned the image of the two thus:
They look like they’re in a heist movie with Rihanna as the tough-as-nails leader/master thief and Lupita as the genius computer hacker.
That was 2 years ago, and the plot would have remained forgotten in Tumblr, had it not been revived on Twitter.
Twitter user @1800SADGAL posted a similar caption on the image last month, and it got 99,000 retweets, the typo notwithstanding.
Three days later, Lupita confirmed her willingness to take part in the movie, as did Rihanna after being asked by Lupita.
Ava DuVernay, who had been chosen by Twitter as the film’s director, likewise confirmed her participation, leaving only Issa Rae, the proposed screenwriter, as unconfirmed.
In true Twitter fashion, a typing cat confirmed she’d be working on the screenplay.
A movie started by fans has so many alternative paths to take, and some fans have made it known what they don’t or do want.
For @GoodbyeSpoons, it’s a tired trope.
“Please don’t let it be a played out plot where the girl falls in love with they and gives it all up for him. Just please.”
@AFanGirl Potato also has a suggestion- make the iconic photo the last scene.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
