Quarter finals of Champions’ League made everyone very careful this week. The second leg games, which led to the elimination of Manchester City and FC Barcelona, two favorites of the competition, were epic and sensational. I hope you lived it!
AS Roma, opposed to Liverpool in next semifinals, drove the antic city crazy by overwhelming Barcelona of Lionel Messi 3-0 (goals from Dzeko, De Rossi and Manolas). Defeated 4-1 in the first leg game, no one could really think of a comeback against the Blaugrana, but they did it brightly and sent Iniesta and others back to national hardships.
Liverpool and their African squad (Mané, Salah) won 2-1 in Manchester after the 3-0 in Anfield. A potential comeback was expected when the Citizens scored very early in the game (2’), but Salah and Firmino gave the Reds the opportunity to reach the heights of Europe and maybe another final after the last one in 2007 (defeat 2-1 against Milan AC).
Real Madrid shivered as well. The 3-0 in Turin vanished in Santiago Bernabeu thanks to Mandzukic twice and Matuidi until the last minute of the game, and this polemic penalty kick granted by English referee Michael Oliver due to a fault by Moroccan defender Benatia. Ronaldo scored for the 1-3, enough to qualify Madrid who surely thought it would be easier.
Bayern was the only great one not to panic too much. A draw (0-0) against the Seville of Italian coach Montella opened the doors of the semifinals for the Germans. Madrid will be the next opponent.
